句子间的过渡词是我们“语法与句型”课程中详细讲述的一个知识点。同样，我们在“学术写作”课程中也会提及如何选择合适的过渡词，以保证整段文字的思路流畅。这个知识点的重要性从SAT考试中就可以看出来，是每年必考而且占比很高的一类题型。我们今天就结合SAT真题来看看常见的几类过渡词。
什么是transition words 过渡词？其实就是在句子开头，把这句话与上句话联系在一起的单词或词组。选取合适的过渡词，就是要首先理解上下句之间的逻辑联系，再选择最恰当表达这个联系的单词。好的过渡词能够把句子和句子，以及整段话都完美地“串联”起来，形成顺畅的逻辑思路，如行云流水般没有间断。
下面这个表格里给出了一些英语里常用的过渡词及词组：
在SAT考题当中，考查这个知识点往往是一段两三句话的上下文，然后以“Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition? ”的方式来提问。这类题型几乎每次考试都会有3，4道题，所以同学们应该熟练掌握，保证不丢分。我们来看看一些真题实例：
第一题：
Celebrated Tewa potter Maria Martinez (1887–1980) made her signature all-black ceramic vessels using a heating technique called reduction firing. This technique involves smothering the flame surrounding the clay vessel. _______ the vessel takes on a shiny, black hue.

这题中空白处之前一句话提到了用火加热瓷土，之后一句话提到了该瓷土变成了闪亮的黑色。我们不需要明白这是什么具体工艺，只需知道这是在顺叙一个加工过程，所以明显两句之间不是时间上的递进关系，就是因果关系。在四个答案中只有D表达了顺叙的因果关系。
第二题：
Historians agree that the jazz pianist Jelly Roll Morton was exaggerating when he claimed to have invented jazz music. No one can deny, _______ that Morton’s innovative compositions and remarkable improvisational skills helped shape jazz as a genre during its early years.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
A) therefore,
B) in the second place,
C) in other words,
D) though,
这题中空白处之前一句话认为某位pianist号称自己发明了爵士乐的言论是有些夸张了（“exaggerating”），之后又肯定了他对爵士乐的贡献（“innovative”, “remarkable”），明显先抑后扬，语意出现了转折，所以在四个选项当中，只能选择D。注意C选项in other words不是转折关系，而是“也就是说”，“换句话说”的含义，表明对前面概念的进一步解释，属于并列或递进关系。
第三题：
Etched into Peru’s Nazca Desert are line drawings so large that they can only be fully seen from high above. Archaeologists have known of the lines since the 1920s, when a researcher spotted some from a nearby foothill, and they have been studying the markings ever since. _______ archaeologists’ efforts are aided by drones that capture high-resolution aerial photographs of the lines.

这题空白处之前一句话提到了自从上世纪20年代就开始的一项考古研究（“1920s”, “Archaeologists”），之后的一句话提到了用无人机来拍摄高清图像（“drones”, “high-resolution”），所以明显出现了时间上的跳跃转变。在四个选项中，表示时间联系的只有选项A和C，其中选项C表示保持不变，只有选项A是表示当前与过去的时间转变。
SAT中这类most logical transition 的题目不少，但大家可以看到，只要掌握了一些常见的过渡词，这种题型并不复杂，更多的是考查大家是否读懂了前后句子之间的逻辑联系，只要这点搞清楚了，题目就迎刃而解了。
