About the Project

Sormanni Lab, Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College London.

Our group develops data-driven technologies for rational antibody and protein design, combining AI/machine learning and laboratory directed-evolution and biophysics to create new or improved antibodies and proteins. We build open, usable tools and validate designs using high-throughput measurements and iterative design–build–test cycles in our lab or with academic and industrial collaborators (see www-sormanni.ch.cam.ac.uk).

There is genuine scope for each student to refine the project focus to their interests within the group’s aims.

AI for Antibody and Protein Design (Computational)

Start date: as soon as possible

Eligibility: open to Home and Overseas candidates.

Develop innovative AI methods that design therapeutic-grade antibody/protein sequences. Possible directions include:

  • Foundation/repertoire models and structure-aware learning.
  • Multi-objective optimisation for affinity, stability, solubility and immunogenicity.
  • Active-learning loops that integrate experimental feedback.
  • Interpretable models to reveal sequence–structure–function relationships and predict critical molecular traits.

You’ll work in Python and modern ML frameworks, access real experimental datasets from our lab and partners, and help translate models into practically useful designs for laboratory testing.

• Training across techniques you do not yet know (computational ↔ experimental), tailored to your background.

What we expect:

  • enjoys coding (Python), quantitative thinking, and machine learning; interested in proteins/antibodies. Prior ML experience is welcome but not essential if motivation is strong.
  • motivation, curiosity, rigour, clear communication, willingness to learn outside your comfort zone, and a strong drive to become an independent scientist.

Carbon dynamics of peatlands

About the Project

Study how peatlands form and how they are impacted by changes in drainage networks; how peatland growth unfolds in space and time; how to apply insights about hydrogeomorphic processes in wetlands to halt or reverse greenhouse gas emissions in peatlands. Balance between modeling / numerical work and field work to be developed with the student.
