The bar chart compares seven countries in terms of the percentage of their population living in the two largest cities versus all other cities in 2017. Overall, in most of these countries, a greater share of people lived outside the top two cities than in them. The only exceptions were the UK and France, where the two largest cities accounted for more of the population than all other cities combined.

About 37% of Japanese people resided in the nation's two biggest cities, with an additional 40% living in other cities. Following Japan, the UK, France, and Germany each had roughly half of their populations living in urban areas. In the UK, approximately 35% of the population lived in the two major cities, compared to only around 20% in smaller cities. Similarly, France saw about 30% of its people in the largest cities and 28% in the rest. Germany's urban population was evenly split, with 25% in the top two cities and another 25% in other cities.
