演讲八级98分的写作是如何构思的？

这几年来，我们有近100来位学生获得了LAMDA Speaking in Public 公众演讲 6-8级的好成绩，并获取了铜牌🥉，银牌🥈和金牌🏅️。

其中不少同学们获得了奖牌级别Distinction优秀的好成绩，今天我们来看看INHANA的一位优秀学员在2023年获得LAMDA公众演讲八级金牌Distinction 三篇考试演讲中的一篇关于政治性话题的主题演讲。

演讲的主题是关于美国的枪支暴力问题 Gun violence in the US。学生是一位初中在上海某国际学校就读的L同学，在上海完成了七级演讲的学习和考试。高中转学到英国后，L同学在英国参加了校内LAMDA八级演讲金牌的考试，并获得了全校最高成绩-LAMDA公众演讲八级优秀Distinction 98分的超高分。

Good morning, today I address the issue of gun violence in the US. During a year when over 5,000 youngers died from gun wounds in the US, in Great Britain, where gun ownership is very controlled, only 19 youngsters died from gun wounds. This gap in fatalities is present due to the Second Amendment in the US constitution which gives people the right to keep and bear arms. But to understand why the US is so much more relaxed with something as dangerous as guns, the history of guns must be explored.

The Second Amendment, approved in 1791, was proposed by James Madison to allow the creation of civilian forces that can counteract a tyrannical federal government. Only 8 years before, was the American Revolutionary War fought for America's independence from Great Britain. This perhaps led to the motion for guns to be legalised in order to counteract any future threats and they felt like guns won them their independence so guns should be a physical symbol of their independence, hence why there is such controversy on whether it should continue to be legalised. Though a crucial aspect to America's history, the evolution of guns has made them more deadly, efficient, and easy to buy. That is why gun violence has transformed into a symbol of violence and terror associated with the US.

Let's take a further look at some statistics. In 2021, there were 20,726 gun deaths, excluding suicides in the US, 693 number of mass shooting incidents and 18.8 million guns sold. An estimated 81.4 million adult Americans own a firearm as well as, the USA having the highest gun suicide rate in the world. 7.1 in 100,000.

So, if so many people die from guns in the US every year, what laws have been put in place to control this? Well, The Gun Control Act of 1968 prohibits youngsters, convicted criminals, the mentally disabled, dishonourably discharged military personnel, and others from purchasing firearm from a federally authorized dealer. But since then, nothing has really been done. For instance, in 2008, the Supreme Court struck down a Washington DC law that banned handguns, the court's first ruling on the Second Amendment in nearly seventy years. Meanwhile, gun violence has surged amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As of June 2022, guns have killed some nineteen thousand people in the United States . The majority of those were in acts of suicide. Mass shootings were also occurring at a rate of at least one per day.

We need to put a stop to the violence and terror experienced in the US. Children go to school fearing a school shooting. How is that the right environment to study ? I suggest further restrictions should be made to ban the ownership of automatic and semi-automatic weapons. These weapons such as the AR-15 are the weapon for choice in mass shootings and are unnecessary for the public to hold. These basic restrictions should be made to protect people against gun violence.

This controversy about guns puts into questions people's right to own guns, but also people's lives, and wether to prioritise the concept of freedom over one's opportunity to exercise it. Thank you.
