Why do you want to study this course or subject?

Living organisms never fail to amaze me with their ability to utilise raw materials to fuel and facilitate complex life processes. I am looking forward to uncovering these mechanisms in greater detail and investigating how they can be applied during my degree.

Oxford UNIQ Biology summer school allowed me to develop my practical skills and uncover a breadth to the subject which I had been unaware of; I learned to use gel electrophoresis to sequence DNA, investigated cooperation between bacteria and explored the behaviour of parasitic nematode worms. I particularly enjoyed gaining an in depth understanding of Huntington's disease during our group project. We examined the genetic abnormalities which cause the disease and the ethical questions raised by our ability to diagnose it given its irreversibility. I relished the opportunity to apply my knowledge of genetics and learn about biological processes in greater detail.

I have expanded my knowledge of the subject by organising a visit to the biology research centre at the Cornwall campus of Exeter University where I shadowed a PhD student as he researched the effect of electric street lighting on moths. I learned how researchers formulate hypotheses and test them within a lab environment, which gave me an insight into the practical side of studying Biology. Reading Jerry A Coyne's 'Why Evolution Is True' provided me with an in depth understanding of how evolution happens and the evidence for it. Having a comprehensive knowledge of evolutionary mechanisms has enabled me to appreciate the diversity of life as a result of millions of years of progress. I also listen to Radio 4's 'The Life Scientific' and read the 'New Scientist' magazine; these put my studies in context and mean I can keep up with the latest in biology research. I particularly enjoyed following Shinya Mayanaka's research into pluripotent cells after first reading about his work in 'The Epigenetics Revolution' by Nessa Carey. The revolutionary nature of his findings and their implications for modern medicine are truly inspiring, and it is Biology's constantly evolving nature which makes it an exciting and relevant subject to study.

I am looking forward to learning about Biology at degree level, and I hope my motivation, enthusiasm and interest in the subject will mean that I am ultimately able to contribute to it as well as study it.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

Studying English Literature at A Level has improved my ability to analyse text critically and argue my point of view logically and convincingly. These skills have proved invaluable when writing scientific essays during A Level Biology and assessing the validity of science coverage in the media. I enjoyed applying the statistical methods we learnt at Mathematics A Level during a field trip to the Jurassic coast when we investigated the spread of populations of limpets and sea snails. I saw how Biology complements and brings to life mathematical methods.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Outside school I have been project manager on a winning team as part of the Young Enterprise scheme; I also work part time as a shop assistant. I balance these activities with my school work and have found my confidence, organisational skills and ability to work in a team have improved massively, all of which will be essential when working in a lab environment and keeping up with the work load during my degree.
