What’s it like to cross a continent by bus

Taking the bus may be a routine part of many people’s daily commute, but few would think of using it for long-distance travel. Spending nearly two months on a bus, crossing borders, deserts, and mountains, and passing through vastly different cultures, before finally arriving on the other side of the continent sounds like a travel fantasy straight out of a movie, but in the mid-20th century, it was a reality. Among the most legendary of these journeys was the London to Calcutta bus service, often remembered as the longest bus route in the world. Starting in 1957, this extraordinary trip covered roughly 20,000 miles and 12 countries, taking about 50 days to complete. The bus left London and travelled across Europe and Asia, eventually reaching Kolkata in India. For a ticket price of around £145, passengers were not just buying transportation—they were buying a moving tour across half the world.
The route itself reads like a geography lesson brought to life. After leaving England, the bus crossed Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Yugoslavia, before heading deeper into Eastern Europe and Asia through Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and finally India. Each border marked not just a political transition, but a shift in landscape, language, and daily life. What made the journey especially fascinating was that it was not a bare-bones survival trip. The bus was an AEC Regal III model, surprisingly well-equipped for its time, with sleeping compartments, fans, and music.Passengers sometimes stayed in hotels or camped along the way, turning the ride into a hybrid of transport and travelling expedition.

The experience was designed for exploration as much as movement. Stops included iconic locations such as the Taj Mahal, the banks of the Ganges at Banaras, the Caspian Sea coast, and the dramatic Khyber Pass. Cities like Istanbul, Vienna, Tehran, Kabul, and Salzburg offered shopping days and breaks from the road. This iconic service later evolved into even more ambitious variations. One version extended beyond India toward Southeast Asia, reaching countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and even Singapore, before parts of the journey were continued or modified through road and sea connections. However, such routes were not meant to last forever. Over time, political instability—including tensions in regions like Iran and between India and Pakistan—made parts of the journey unsafe.Eventually, the service was discontinued in the 1970s after completing around 15 trips.
Transoceánica
The London–India route is not the only contender in the story of extreme bus travel. In recent years, a different kind of long-distance route has gained attention: the Rio de Janeiro to Lima bus journey in South America. Stretching roughly 6,000 kilometers, the Transoceánica bus route takes about five days and passes through more than 30 stops, crossing rainforests, mountains, and high-altitude regions of the Andes.Operated by Transacreana, this is widely regarded as one of the longest and most dramatic bus journeys still operating today. The ticket price is approximately R$1,300 (around US$225) , a bargain compared to the cost of multiple flights or rental car options across the continent.
Unlike the historic London–Calcutta service, this modern route isless about luxury exploration and more about endurance and practicality.Inside the bus, life takes on its own rhythm. Drivers work in shifts, often rotating every few hours to manage the exhausting demands of long-distance mountain driving. Passengers settle into a routine of sleeping, eating during scheduled stops, and adjusting to the slow but constant movement across countries. Facilities are simple but functional: reclining seats, limited restroom access, and planned stops for showers and meals. Passengers experience dramatic changes in geography—from tropical Amazon landscapes to the thin air of high mountain passes where altitude sickness can become a real challenge.
Despite the challenges—fatigue, altitude sickness, long hours on the road—many passengers describe the experience as unforgettable.Unlike air travel, where continents disappear beneath clouds, the bus offers a continuous, ground-level narrative of geography. One moment passengers are crossing humid lowlands; days later they are surrounded by snow-dusted peaks and dramatic mountain roads. There is also a strong social dimension. The bus carries a mix of passengers: migrants returning home, travelers exploring South America by land, families carrying large amounts of luggage, and backpackers chasing the experience of overland travel. Conversations happen in multiple languages, and the journey becomes a temporary community formed in motion. In the broader history of long-distance bus routes, the Rio de Janeiro to Lima journey represents a modern version of an older idea: that travel is not only about reaching a destination, but about experiencing the space in between.
