Against this background, some people argue that the study of ancient cultures has little relevance to contemporary students and should therefore no longer occupy a place in the curriculum. I strongly disagree with this view because ancient cultures provide essential insights into modern societies and develop forms of critical thinking that remain highly valuable today.
The first reason for studying ancient cultures is that modern societies cannot be fully understood without examining their historical foundations. Contemporary political institutions, legal principles, languages and social customs did not emerge suddenly; rather, they developed gradually from earlier systems of thought and organisation. Without knowledge of this development, students may recognise how modern institutions operate but fail to understand why they exist in their current form or why certain values remain influential. Studying ancient cultures therefore gives learners a deeper and more coherent understanding of the societies in which they live.
Furthermore, the study of ancient cultures strengthens students’ analytical and interpretative abilities. Evidence about the distant past is often incomplete, written from limited perspectives or open to several possible interpretations. Students must consequently compare different sources, identify bias, distinguish reliable evidence from speculation and construct conclusions based on reasoned judgement. These intellectual processes are transferable to many modern contexts, particularly those in which people must evaluate conflicting information rather than simply memorise established facts. Ancient cultural studies should thus be regarded not merely as the acquisition of historical knowledge, but as effective training in critical thinking.
Admittedly, modern education must prepare students for employment, and subjects connected directly with science, technology and professional skills may appear more practical. Since curriculum time is limited, it would be unreasonable to require every student to examine ancient societies in excessive detail while neglecting competencies that are immediately applicable in the workplace. Nevertheless, education should not be reduced to vocational preparation alone, because employees and citizens also need cultural awareness, intellectual independence and the ability to understand complex social systems. A balanced curriculum can prioritise modern skills while still preserving a meaningful place for ancient culture, making complete exclusion both unnecessary and educationally short-sighted.
In conclusion, the study of ancient cultures remains relevant because it explains the origins of contemporary society and cultivates sophisticated analytical skills. Although it should be taught in proportion to other modern educational priorities, removing it from education would narrow students’ knowledge and weaken the broader intellectual purpose of learning.
