Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The ability of Economics to delve into the complexities of crises captivates me. The banking system's blind faith in the rising value of the housing market when issuing credit of up to 125% of the value of a house showed me how there was imperfect information, due to the opportunity for huge profits. The fact that regulators had failed to spot this and the measures that banks took for these profits such as the shadow banking system was even more concerning. I saw how there was imperfect information in the banking system and how regulators did not understand the complexity of the system and how products such as derivatives were not fully understood and thus could not be properly regulated. David Smith's "Free Lunch" introduced me to adverse selection, which I related to the banking crisis; when a bank sets one price for all its low-balance, high activity customers, it risks being adversely selected against by its high-balance, low activity, and thus most profitable, customers. "Free Lunch" also considered the work of various economists such as David Ricardo and this made me look more into the development of Economic theory, as I became interested in how theories are continually changing and advancing.

I find it remarkable how globalisation permeates countries, particularly the once impenetrable China, allowing capitalism to flourish. Thus, I did my Extended Project Qualification on China and the effect this change has had on economic policy. The conclusions I came to were that China has successfully changed economic policy to allow it to gain the advantages of Capitalism and that leaders like Deng Xiaoping have carried out policies such as De-collectivisation leading to Chinese prosperity. The fact that Economics has such significant real world applications as well as the theoretical analysis involved makes it a very appealing subject to study. I would thoroughly enjoy delving deeper into this subject and learning more about this diverse and challenging discipline.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

I regularly read newspapers and publications, like the Economist, to keep up to date with economic news. I have also attended talks by societies such as the ASI and the IEA. One talk by Norman Lamont, titled "Globalisation after the Crash", brought together the financial crisis and globalisation. He spoke about how protectionism is increasing and how we risk a slow-down in global trade. I realised that we would need the right type of regulation; however countries need to keep trade free as it is the main engine for growth and will make recoveries much faster. Conversely, John Kay's "The Truth About Markets" describes how 'one-size-fits-all' globalisation hurts developing countries and he takes economic theory and applies it to a real life social and cultural context. He believes that markets cannot be imposed but are the sum of evolution and adaptation, thus giving me a more cautious angle on the subject.

The Extended Project Qualification allowed me to pursue an interest in more depth than the syllabus allows and the project and research skills are invaluable. I was asked to write an article for the school magazine, on the origins and development of the economic crisis, which allowed me to explore an area about which I was already interested. I concluded that the crisis occurred because of factors such as the banks high exposure in sub-prime markets and their failure to lend responsibly.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Beyond my passion for Economics, I have undertaken many responsibilities as a Prefect in two roles and a Student observer. As a prefect, I have aided a Year 9 Form Tutor and I have helped keep discipline in the school. As a student observer, I have been involved in lesson observations with subsequent feedback. These have allowed me to become involved in school life and contribute to the school community. In my spare time I enjoy playing badminton, solving logic puzzles and reading。
