1/Synthetic elements with very heavy nuclei, such as darmstadtadium (Ds) and flerovium (Fl), can exhibit behaviors that make these elements challenging to classify. The earliest experiment with Fl revealed properties associated with noble gases, while a second experiment found that Fl acts like a volatile metal. When Yakushev, Lens, et al. studied interactions between Fl and gold surfaces, they found that Fl is less reactive than the volatile metal mercury but is more reactive than the noble gas radon. These results confirm that Fl forms chemical bonds with gold, but the mechanisms of these reactions are unclear.

2/Maltese lithic (stone implement) assemblages from the sixth and seventh millennia BCE exhibit notable characteristics. Nearly all implements were fashioned from limestone—mostly from beach cobbles—rather than superior chert or obsidian, and the assemblages predominantly comprise flakes produced through direct percussion, with negligible representation of cores, blades, or retouched tools. The fairly rudimentary nature of Malta's lithic industry parallels contemporaneous Sardinian technologies rather than the sophisticated geometric microlith traditions documented in neighboring Sicily.

双篇:proxies for CH₄ fluxes

The following text is adapted from William Shakespeare's 1598 play Henry IV, Part 1. King Henry is addressing several noblemen who are rumored to have been disloyal to him.

KING HENRY:

My blood hath been too cold and temperate,

Unapt to stir at these indignities,

And you have found me, for accordingly

You tread upon my patience; but be sure

I will from henceforth rather be myself,

Mighty and to be feared, than my [disposition],

Which hath been smooth as oil, soft as young down,

And therefore lost that title of respect

Which the proud soul ne'er pays but to the proud.

King Henry

There are over 150 species of the cactus genus Mammillaria throughout the Americas, but their survival can be threatened by high precipitation and dense vegetation that blocks sunlight. Researchers have located species from the genus in almost every state in Mexico, with several of them, like M. knippeliana, restricted to only one state. The fact that this genus has not been observed in eastern and western Coahuila has been attributed to a lack of appropriate habitat, but much of the landscape in this area is notoriously inaccessible, which suggests that ____

A student is writing a research paper on the history of irrigation in the state of California, situating the development of the Dodge Reservoir (created in Lassen County, California, in 1893) in a larger historical context. The student claims that innovation in irrigation techniques was driven in part by the climate in some parts of the state.

A. "While the low humidity of Southern California's desert areas makes irrigation a requirement if agriculture is to be a success there, the relatively high humidity in the northern parts of the state makes such practices less necessary."

B. "The necessity of irrigation infrastructure in California today cannot be overstated, since it is the most common means of conveying water for agricultural use."

C. "The irrigation system developed by the Hohokam people in the 7th century CE in what is now Arizona was simple but applied hydraulic engineering design features that are still used today in both Arizona and California."

D. "Competition for scarce water resources in Southern California inspired the development of sprinkler irrigation systems, a manner of irrigating that requires less use of water than traditional surface irrigation methods."

e.g. Researchers recently theorized that Copper Age (3500 BCE to 2750 BCE) owl-shaped carvings collected from Iberian archaeological sites were likely toys created by children. This hypothesis, based on comparative analyses of owl drawings made by modern children, is supported by the objects predominantly being crafted from slate—a material that, because of its ______ be easily carved by

Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to conventions of Standard English?

A) malleability could

B) malleability could—

C) malleability—could

e.g.

1/Among its thousands of portraits of well-known figures from British history, London's National Portrait Gallery (NPG) includes self-portraits by noteworthy British artists, including one of Rachel Strachey. ____ the subjects of most NPG portraits are different from (and more famous than) the artists who painted them.

A. However, Strachey's portrait is not the only self-portrait of an artist in the museum:

B. Of course, such portraits are anomalies in the context of the museum's collection:

C. Furthermore, Strachey's portrait exemplifies the museum's bias in favor of autoportraiture:

D. Consequently, such portraits reinforce the museum's curatorial philosophy:

2/Researchers have long been aware that pistol shrimp use a specialized claw to create bubbles that stun their prey, but understanding of the phenomenon has been limited by researchers' inability to accurately measure the tiny, rapid movements of the shrimp. ____ scientists have turned to computer simulations to re-create the claw's closing motion, allowing them to track the pressure, speed, and density of water throughout the bubble formation.

A. In light of this limitation,

B. Addressing the flaws in their hypothesis,

C. To correct this misconception,

D. To determine where they went wrong,
