TOPIC INTRODUCTION
辩题背景
- 2026 NHSDLC春季常规赛 -
“Neijuan” (内卷), a concept that has gained popularity in Chinese work culture in recent years, is often translated as involution.Essentially, it is a concept originally denoting self-reinforcing systems that make little to no meaningful progress overtime.This concept has evolved to encapsulate societal trends such as increasing competition and intensifying work expectations that do not necessarily correlate to balanced rewards such as higher compensation, job security and better job mobility.As frustration with these dynamics has grown, so too has a cultural response, often described as “anti-neijuan” (反内卷) which rejects the glorification of excessive competition and seeks to reorient the workplace norms towards efficiency and work well-being.
Pro teams advocating for this culture transformation believe thatanti-neijuan sentiments are a necessary antidote to self-defeating work culture.proponents believe that taking too much from oneself in extreme internal competition leads to burnout, poor health, and decreasing marginal returns to productivity, ultimately undermining the long-term quality of the workforce. From this perspective, pushing back against involution is not about rejecting hard work, but rather about redirecting effort toward meaningful output, innovation, and sustainable performance rather than performative overextension.
On the Con side, the warning issued by critics is thatcompetition, even if uncomfortable, has always had a significant role to play in the development of skills, discipline, and economic dynamism.They therefore express that the anti-neijuan sentiment may end up over correcting to the point where performance standards are diminished, thereby losing the incentives that encourage people to heavily invest in their own skills’ growth and development, especially in environments and industries where opportunities are scarce and speed and endurance are essential.
This resolution therefore challenges debaters to weigh a fundamental tension; can societies move away from self-defeating escalation without weakening the competitive forces that fuel growth and opportunities. Ordoes rejecting involution risk weakening the very engine that drives progress?
