Impromptu Speaking (IMP) is officially here!
The first IMP competition will take place at the WSDA Shanghai Open.
Date: December 26, 2026
Division: Grades 6–12
Impromptu Speaking is also an official speech event at the NSDA National Speech & Debate Tournament. If you’re aiming to compete at NSDA Nationals in June 2027, now is a great time to start preparing—and the Shanghai Open is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable competition experience.

活动描述
Event Description
即兴演讲（Impromptu Speaking，简称 IMP）是 WSDA/NSDA 演讲类竞赛项目之一。该项目考察选手在有限时间内快速思考、组织语言和公开表达的综合能力。
选手在七分钟内完成选题、准备和演讲全过程，演讲过程不得借助任何笔记。演讲内容可以幽默轻松，也可以严肃深入，题目范围涵盖谚语、习语、时事事件、抽象概念、名言警句等。
Impromptu Speaking (IMP) is a public speaking event in the WSDA/NSDA competitive speech program. It tests a competitor's ability to think quickly, organize ideas, and deliver a coherent speech under strict time pressure. In a total of seven minutes, the speaker must select a topic, brainstorm ideas, outline the speech, and deliver the speech without using their notes. Speeches may be light-hearted or serious. Prompts range from proverbs, idioms, current events, abstract words, famous quotes and more.

活动规则
Competition Rules
a.题目范围
题目包括但不限于谚语（proverbs）、习语（idioms）、抽象词汇（abstract words）、时事事件（current events）、名言警句（famous quotes）等。每轮比赛使用不同的主题领域。
b. 抽签规则
每个在比赛房间内，评委都会收到一个装有本轮演讲题目的信封。具体流程如下：
1. 评委呼叫第一位演讲者上前抽取题目。
2. 第一位演讲者从信封中随机抽取三个题目，随后评委启动计时器。
3. 学生选定演讲题目后，需将剩余两个题目放回信封，并在7分钟内完成准备与演讲。
4. 重复步骤1至3，直至所有演讲者均已完成演讲。
c. 准备与演讲
选手共有七分钟时间，包含准备和演讲两个环节。选手可自行分配两部分的时间比例。例如：
• 准备3分钟 + 演讲4分钟
• 准备1分钟 + 演讲6分钟
• 准备1分30秒 + 演讲5分30秒（推荐策略）
没有最低准备时间要求，也没有最低演讲时间要求。但选手应在尽可能短的时间内发展出最佳的结构和论证。
d.资料与笔记规定
选手不可以携带任何资料进入演讲教室，也不允许使用任何电子设备。仅允许携带白纸与笔。选手在准备阶段可以书写笔记，但在演讲过程中严禁使用任何笔记。
e. 时间规则
a. Topic Areas
Topics include, but are not limited to, proverbs, idioms, current events, abstract words, famous quotes. A different subject area is used for each round.
b. Drawing Procedure
A judge in each section/room is provided with an envelope with a set of topics for the round. The procedure is as follows:
1. The judge calls the first speaker to draw their topic
2. The first speaker draws three topics from the envelope. The judge starts the timer.
3. Once the student has chosen the speech topic, they return the other two to the envelope.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 until all speakers have spoken.
c. Preparation and Delivery
The speaker has a total of seven minutes, which includes both preparation and delivery. The speaker may allocate the time between the two parts as they see fit. For example:
• 3 minutes preparation + 4 minutes speech
• 1 minute preparation + 6 minutes speech
• 1 minute 30 seconds preparation + 5 minutes 30 seconds speech (recommended strategy)
There is no minimum time required for preparation and no minimum time for speaking. The student should work to develop the best possible structure and reasoning in as short a time as possible.
d. Materials and Notes Policy
Students should not bring any material, nor any electronic device. They may bring blank paper and pens and write notes during the preparation period, but no notes shall be used during the presentation.

比赛流程
Round Procedure
即兴演讲从选手收到题目的那一刻开始，以下所有步骤必须在七分钟内完成：
选手自行决定如何在七分钟内分配准备和演讲的时间。关键在于找到最适合自己的时间分配策略。
a.轮次安排
在B级比赛中，即兴演讲选手至少进行三轮预选赛。排名靠前者晋级进入淘汰赛。
b. 赛后旁听
选手完成自己的演讲后，留在赛场旁听其他选手的演讲。
Impromptu begins the moment the speaker receives the prompts. Everything below must fit inside one seven-minute window:
The speaker decides how to allocate the seven minutes between preparation and delivery. The key is to find the time allocation strategy that works best for them.
a. Round Structure
In B level tournaments of WSDA, at least three preliminary rounds must be held. Speakers of higher ranks will break to elimination rounds.
b. Contestant Listening Expectations
Once a speaker has spoken, they stay and listen to other speakers in that round.

时间管理
Time Management
即兴演讲的时间管理是比赛的核心挑战。七分钟计时器同时计算准备和演讲时间。

• 七分钟总时长包含准备和演讲两个环节
• 30秒宽限期：总时间可延长至7分30秒
• 超出宽限期：选手不得获得该轮第一名（需所有评委一致认定超时）
• 没有其他超时处罚，具体排名由评委自行决定
The seven-minute clock includes both thinking and speaking. Effective time management is the core challenge of Impromptu.

b. Overtime Rules
• The 7-minute total includes both preparation and delivery.
• A 30-second grace period extends the combined clock to 7:30.
• Beyond the grace period, the speaker may not be ranked first (all judges must agree).
• No other prescribed penalty for overtime; ranking is at each judge's discretion.

演讲结构
Speech Structure
一篇优秀的即兴演讲应包含以下基本结构：
a.开头（Introduction）
• 阐明所选题目的含义
• 提供充分的背景信息，让听众了解演讲方向
• 提出清晰的中心论点（Thesis Statement）
b. 主体（Body）
• 最常见的方式是围绕2-3个主题领域进行深入探讨
• 每个论点都要用具体的例子来支撑
• 例如：如果中心论点是"培养创新"，可以介绍2种有效方法并用实例证明
c. 结尾（Conclusion）
• 重申题目和中心论点
• 回顾主要论据
• 给出有力的总结性陈述
An effective Impromptu speech follows a basic structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion.
a. Introduction
• Explain what the selected prompt means.
• Provide adequate context for the trajectory of the speech.
• Present a clear thesis statement.
b. Body
• The most common approach explores 2–3 topic areas in greater depth.
• Each point should be supported with specific examples.
• Example: If the thesis focuses on cultivating innovation, introduce two effective methods and prove them with examples.
c. Conclusion
• Reiterate the prompt and thesis statement.
• Review the main arguments.
• Deliver a strong closing statement

评判标准
Judging Criteria
即兴演讲打分区间为90-100分，裁判根据选手表现给出个人分数及本轮排名。
从以下三个核心维度对选手进行评价：

Competitor Guidelines

• 练习时间分配策略，找到最适合自己的节奏
• 积累各领域的案例素材（历史、科学、文学、时事等）
• 练习演讲结构：开头 → 2-3个论点 → 结尾

即兴演讲需要选手原创内容，禁止选手在演讲中引用或转述来自生成式AI来源的文本。生成式AI应被用作赛前学习工具，而非内容来源。

• Practice time allocation strategies and find your optimal rhythm.
• Build a mental library of examples across history, science, literature, and current events.

Impromptu Speaking requires original competitor-created content. Students are prohibited from quoting or paraphrasing text directly from generative AI sources. Generative AI should be used as a learning tool, not a content source.

成绩与排名
Results and Rankings
即兴演讲的排名首先根据选手在各轮比赛中的名次之和确定。如名次之和相同，则比较选手各轮比赛的得分总和。

累计名次总和： 选手在所有轮次比赛中的名次之和。累计名次总和越低，最终排名越靠前。 累计演讲得分：选手各轮比赛得分的总和。累计得分越高，排名越靠前。 |
淘汰赛阶段，除决赛外，所有轮次的比赛结果均采用累计计算。决赛排名则根据评委给出的名次（Rank）确定；如出现名次相同的情况，则以得分（Score）作为决胜依据。
Impromptu Speaking’s rankings are determined first by the sum of a competitor's ranks across rounds. If tied, the sum of the competitor's scores is used.

Cumulative Rank Total:A competitor’s cumulative ranking result across all rounds. A lower cumulative rank total indicates a higher overall placement. Cumulative Speaker Score:The sum of a competitor's scores for each round; a higher score ranks higher. |
In elimination rounds, results from all rounds are cumulative except for the final round. Final-round rankings are based on judges’ ranks, with scores used as a tiebreaker.
