This summer, Sean Shi Zimo from Class G4L of the IS Primary Division represented SUIS Pudong and journeyed to the United States to take part in the Math League Global Finals and Summer Camp—an extraordinary event dedicated to the exploration of mathematical thinking. Competing in the grades 4-5 category, he achieved double silver medals in both the individual and team events.
Looking back to his third grade, Zimo had already won a silver medal in the preliminary round and a gold in the second round of Math League. Although he qualified for that year's global finals, he was just below the age requirement. Yet, he never stopped striving ahead. In the summer of 2025, at ten years and nine months old, he finally received the official invitation and realized his dream of standing on the stage of an international mathematical event.
The prestigious competition was co-organised by Math League and the mathematics departments of Princeton University, Columbia University, and Williams College. It brought together talented young mathematicians from across the globe, including participants from the United States, Canada, China, and many other countries and regions. The Chinese delegation comprised outstanding students from top international and bilingual schools in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macau.
Under the theme ‘Discover the Beauty of Mathematics, Inspire Innovative Thinking’, the contest blended intellectual exchange, teamwork, and creative inspiration. The individual events—comprising the Individual Round and Speed Round—challenged the agility and depth of each student's thinking. In contrast, the team competitions—the Team Round and Relay Round—emphasised trust, strategic planning, and seamless collaboration. On this international stage, Zimo faced each challenge calmly and persevered through difficulties, ultimately securing an outstanding position in the overall rankings and shining brightly among the award winners.
During the summer camp, Zimo immersed himself not only in advanced mathematical lectures and stimulating group discussions but also connected with peers from around the world. Through activities like the Talent Show, he built wonderful cross-cultural friendships that extended far beyond the competition halls.
As he reflected: “This was more than a competition—it was an expedition of growth. Staying independently in a university dorm enhanced my self-discipline, the contests inspired me to reflect on the balance between individual and team effort, and visits to Princeton and Harvard expanded my vision of the future. This cross-cultural learning journey opened a bigger world for me and deepened my love for mathematics.”
From earning a Kangaroo Math silver medal in second grade; to achieving a SASMO bronze medal and traveling to Singapore for SIMOC where he won double bronze in both individual and team events in third grade; to now attaining double silver medals at Math League—we have seen Zimo walking steadily along the path of mathematics with calm as his stride and passion as his light, gathering achievements and illumination along the way. This September, he will enter fifth grade. May he continue to set sail with dreams and shine his unique light across the vast ocean of knowledge.
