In the global era,"global perspective"has become a key topic in education——and it's also a direction SMCS teachers and students keep exploring and practicing. In this session of SMCS Talk, we focused on"EducationandGlobalPerspective"andinvited studentsBettyandYuri, as well asTeacher Mark. They shared their understanding and practice from angles like language learning and identity, based on their personal experiences.

Effective Learning:

Start with "Smart Practice "

Yuri以《The Smart Practice Secret: How I Learned to Learn》为题,揭示了高效学习的核心——不在于拼命付出,而在于“聪明地努力”。

Yuri, with her talkThe Smart Practice Secret: How I Learned to Learn, revealed the core of effective learning — it's not about blind hard work, but"smart practice".She noted: " Learning with the wrong method is like running on a treadmill — you seem busy, but you're not making progress". Drawing inspiration fromPeak: Deliberate Practice, she applied the"five-step method"to her studies:

Set specific, tinny goals

Break big goals into daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. A clear, achievable plan boosts confidence and leads to the final goal step by step.

Enter a flow state

Avoid distractions like phones or pets. Long, focused study sessions greatly improve study efficiency.

Embrace the struggle

Face tasks you fear. It's tough, but growth happens after pushing through.

Get immediate feedback

Summarize after class to identify strengths and weaknesses, then adjust your plan promptly.

Persist until it becomes a habit

Effective learning needs consistency—only persistence makes it efficient.

Yuri emphasized that: "Excellence comes from theright method, not talent." Her ability toturn theory into practiceis exactly the core skill valued in global competition. At SMCS, we care more about"how to learn"than just "what to learn".

Learning English is togain

the ability to communicate with the world

Betty redefined the meaning of English learning: its core is not about pursuing "correct answers", butcommunication, expression, and consistent practice. She pointed out that when we fixate on vocabulary size or grammar accuracy, we often forget English’s true role—a bridge between cultures.

Betty suggested learning through favorite videos and songs, which buildsan immersive environment. When you laugh at an English drama line or resonate with song lyrics, English is no longer cold words—it becomes a living language filled with emotions and memories. As she gave an example: "When you learn 'achieve', make a sentence like 'I want to achieve my dreams'." This practical approach is key to global communication. Thispractical-oriented learningis the key to mastering a language.

English isn't an "extra bonus" — it's a basic tool for understanding the world. As Betty said:"Learning English well helps us see a wider world."SMCS strives to build a solid language bridge for students to connect with the world.

Identity: From "Not Fitting In" to

Embracing "Differences"

Asateacher in SMCS’s liberal arts department,Mark shared his cross-cultural journey. This journey involved feeling "caught between cultures" as a child in the US, struggling with identity in college, discovering the value of his diverse background at work, and finallyreconciling with his "differences" at SMCS. His story resonated with many international students and provided deep insights into "finding oneself globally". His story not only resonates with many international students but also provides warm and profound answers to the question of "how to establish identity from a global perspective."

"Too Asian among white kids, too American among Asian kids"

This line summed up the common struggle of cross-cultural grownups. Through"Asian American Studies"courses, Mark realized this wasn't "failing to fit in", but"rebuilding identity": acknowledging his mixed background as a unique perspective, not a flaw. He didn't cater to one culture; instead, he integrated diversity to be himself.

The ability of cross-cultural insightis a strength from his diverse background, aligns with SMCS's"integrating Chinese and Western cultures"philosophy.Mark stressed: global perspective isn't about becoming someone else, but a better version of yourself—rooted in your culture while open to new ideas.

This session of SMCS Talk was more than speeches—it was a collision of ideas and an expansion of horizons. The three speakers explained"global education"from different sides: it's not just better English or learning methods, but also cultivating cultural understanding, identity, and global competence.
