今天,我们邀请到籽奥的创校外方校长David Ranson 先生,从个人职业经历、对中西方教育的观察、学校核心教育理念等大家关心的角度出发,分享他对国际教育本土化实践的深度思考。

为什么加入籽奥?

从学生到教育从业者,一直以来,我都在支持国际教育事业的发展。

在来到中国之前,我在英国一所高中担任校长,就读的学生基本上都来自英国本土。那时我就希望能帮助学生获得更国际化的学习体验,拓宽他们的视野,因此我来到中国,逐渐和中国的学校建立起合作关系。通过国际学生交流项目、教师专业发展协作项目、校长经验分享会等活动,我的学生和教职工们获益颇多。

在这个过程中,我逐渐爱上中国,最终选择到中国定居,希望助力中国的学校和学生实现他们的国际梦想。此后我在中国创办了一所知名的、面向外籍人员子女的国际学校。

在这所学校步入正轨后,我选择加入籽奥,支持这所优秀的学校筹建和发展。和之前不同的是,籽奥广泛地向中国本土的学生开放,我相信在这里,能够帮助更多本土学生获得国际化体验,这更加贴近我从事教育事业的初衷。

Could you briefly introduce yourself and why you joined Zeolym?

I have been an advocate of international education my entire life; first as a student, then as an education professional.

I previously worked as a principal in England in a high school for British students, and I wanted to help British students access international experiences to broaden their minds and world outlooks – in a similar way to how I benefited as a child.This brought me to China to establish partnerships with Chinese schools, so that our students and staff may benefit from these relationships. For example, through international student exchange programmes, collaborative teacher professional development programmes, principal sharings, and so on. Through this work, I found a love for China, so moved here when the time was right to be able to support schools and students with their international dreams.

A big achievement that I’m proud of is to be the founding principal of a famous international school here in China. That school is for the children of foreign personnel. Once established, I moved to Zeolym to assist the establishment of this wonderful school and support its growth, because this school is for local Chinese students –something which is much closer to my heart and how I got involved in this kind of work in the first place (helping local students access international experiences).

您对中国教育环境和学生印象如何?

与英国教育有何不同?

不仅是中国的教育环境,我觉得整个中国都是一个充满远大梦想的国家。这里的每个人都专注于自我提升,为了更美好的未来而努力奋斗,这正是吸引我来到这里的最大原因。

如果从教育的角度上来说,首先我认为教育并非一个“体系”(system),用体系来形容教育无法体现教育所具备的动态性、以人为本和整体性本质。学习是一个高度个性化且不断发展的过程,它受人际关系、个人好奇心以及多样生活经历的影响。

或许我们更应该将教育视为一个有机的整体,它会随着时间、技术发展以及个体差异而不断演进。我可以自豪地说,籽奥的办学理念中,恰好体现了这种整体性的学习观。

如果要对比中英教育间的差异,我觉得一个关键区别在于家庭的参与度。在中英两国,家庭都非常重视孩子的教育,但在中国,家庭成员亲自参与学校事务的程度无疑更高,这一点非常好,因为它让我们形成了 “学生-学校-家庭” 三方合作的模式,能切实支持每个学生的成长与发展。

After arriving in China, what was your first impression of the Chinese educational environment and student characteristics?

How does it differ from the education systems in England?

Not only the Chinese educational environment, but China generally is a country with a big dream,where everyone is focused on improvement.In China, people work hard for a better future, which was the biggest attraction to coming here. I love to be part of an environment where everyone is passionate and enthusiastic about the future, day by day making improvements and striving for success.

But I need to correct part of your question, because education in not a system.This mechanistic term fails to capture the dynamic, human centred, holistic essence of education – learning is a deeply personal and evolving process, shaped by relationships, individual curiosities and diverse life experiences. It may be helpful to take the view that education is organic and evolves with time, with technology, with each individual, andI’m really proud to say that this holistic view of learning is captured in the spirit of Zeolym. In terms of differences, a key difference is the involvement of family. In both countries, families care enormously about the education of their children, but there is definitely far more physical family presence at schools in China,which is wonderful as we form a three-way partnership (student, school, family) to really support the growth and development of each student.

您认为籽奥的核心教育理念是什么?

教学中如何融合 “国际化” 与 “本土化”?

籽奥大家庭的每一位成员,都致力于培养学生全面的学术素养,同时以坚定的关爱之心关注每个孩子的成长。

这意味着我们会深入了解每一位学生的个性,为他们量身定制最适合的培养方案,助力他们在学业等各个发展层面发挥潜力,最终敲开理想大学的大门。

在我看来,谈及国际教育,重要的是让学生既要培养国际视野,获得能塑造其世界观的国际化体验(让他们以同理心、关爱和友善看待世界),同时也要深化对自身身份的认知,也就是对 “中国公民” 身份的认同。

我们希望籽奥的教学,可以让同学们成为了解世界、懂得如何与世界沟通、能够为创造惠及全人类的未来而携手合作的“中国公民”。

As an international principal, what do you consider to be the core educational philosophy of Zeolym?How do you integrate "internationalization" and "localization" into daily teaching practices?

Actually, our school’s educational philosophy is exactly as I explained in my previous answer.Each member of the Zeolym family is dedicated to cultivating holistic academic excellence,with unwavering love and care to every child’s growth. This means that we get to know each student, individually, as a person, and consider the best ways to help each student achieve their potential in all aspects of their development, including academically, and to unlock the doors to their dream universities.

What’s important to me when we talk about international education is that students do develop an international outlook, they access international experiences that can help shape how they view the world with compassion, care and kindness, while at the same time developing their understanding of their own identity as-in this case -Chinese citizens. Chinese citizens who know the world, how to communicate with it, and how to work harmoniously for a future that benefits all.

籽奥的外籍教师有何特点?

如何保障中外教师教学质量稳定?

籽奥的外籍教师与中国本土教师一样,在教育领域经验都非常丰富,并且对籽奥的办学理念都有很高的认同感。

本着“为学生提供最优质的学习机会”的共同目标,在教学工作中,我们并不对外籍教师和本土教师进行区分,而是让教师根据各自的优势开展工作。教师们会携手合作,分享教学方法、交流思路与技巧,相互支持,形成一个紧密团结的集体。

教师们通过会议研讨、工作坊、课堂观摩等多种形式相互支持、共同提升。无论是学生还是教师,都能在学校中获得成长,这充分体现了我们对 “终身学习” 理念的切实践行。

通过这个过程,每位教师都能获得个人层面的成长,而籽奥的教师团队也因此能共同进步。

What are the characteristics of the foreign teacher team? How does the school ensure efficient collaboration between domestic and foreign teachers to maintain consistent teaching quality?

The foreign teachers at Zeolym are experienced teaching professionals who share the vision of Zeolym, as are our domestic teachers. In terms of teaching and learning, we don’t distinguish between domestic and foreign. Instead, teachers work according to their individual strengths.

Teachers work together to share pedagogy, share ideas, techniques, and so on, to support each other as one solid team,united in their dedication to provide the best learning opportunities for our students. All of our teachers have a commitment to professional growth. This is both an individual journey, as well as a collective one, as teachers support one another to grow and develop, achieved via meetings, workshops, lesson observations, and much, much more. The school is alive with growth for both students and teachers, which really highlights our genuine commitment to lifelong learning.

对考虑国际教育的中国家庭您有何建议?

如何判断孩子是否适合国际教育?

每个家庭和每个孩子都是独特的。孩子的教育道路,需要全家人共同思考和决策。我认为应该首先考虑孩子的优势和志向,然后调研国内外的教育选项,找到最契合孩子情况的一条路。

可能有些家长会被一些“国际教育路径更轻松”的传言所误导,我认为现实其实恰恰相反,国际教育之旅的要求其实很高。

孩子们要用外语学习学术知识,本身就是一项比较大的挑战,之后可能还要离开家乡到海外学习,其中面临的挑战可想而知,也非常需要家庭的支持;但同样,我相信国际教育带来的益处也可能是巨大的,值得我们为此用尽全力。

我建议大家尽早开始规划,可以与有过国际学习经历的年轻人交流,实地参观学校,与教师和校长沟通,尽可能真切地感受和了解国际教育,这样才能做出充分知情的决定。

当你为孩子做出正确选择时,相信孩子们一定会受益终身。

For Chinese families considering an international education path, what advice would you give them? How can they determine if their child is suitable for an international education?

Every family and every child is unique. Think carefully, together, when considering your educational pathway. Consider what the child’s strengths are, as well as their ambitions, then research local and international options to see which feels like the best fit.

Don’t be deluded by the misconception that an international route will be easier.On the contrary, the demands of an international learning journey are big.Learning in a foreign language is already a big challenge, there is much time away from home – often in a foreign country, there is an increased financial burden compared with some domestic options. However, the benefits of an international learning journey can be huge and well-worth the effort.

My suggestion is to start planning as early as possible.Talk with young people who have experienced international learning, visit schools, talk with teachers and principals. Try to get a real feel and understanding of international learning so that you can make a fully informed decision. When you make the right decision for your child, the rewards will be significant and last a lifetime.
