G7C2 Helen Li

G6C2 Martina Gao

G7C4 Charlie Li

G6C4 Nina Ma

Eight Key Changes After Entering Middle School! How Dehong Shanghai’s Growth Support System Helps Students Transition Smoothly from Elementary to Secondary School

Moving from Grade 5 to Grade 6 may seem like a simple grade progression, but in fact, it marks a crucial turning point in every child’s learning and personal growth journey. With more subjects, higher academic expectations, and new learning models, students also begin to experience changes in their emotional development, social needs, and self-management abilities. Forfamilies currently facing the transition to Secondary School, you may be wondering: How will my child adapt to this new phase of learning? What challenges might arise? And how can families and schools work together to ensure a smooth and confident transition?

Let’s take a closer look atDehong Shanghai’s Grade 6, where personalized growth and future university preparation begin.

8 Transformations to Help Students Adapt to Secondary Learning

1、Different Approaches to Personalized Teaching -an English Learning Pathway Tailored to Each Student

Starting in Grade 6, English lessons at Dehong Shanghai are no longer taught in a single pace for all. Instead, students are placed in one of four proficiency levels according to their English ability.Whether a beginner strengthening the basics or an advanced learner seeking challenge, whether coming from a local school or returning from overseas, every student will finda supportive environment that fosters real progress.

2、Bilingual Mathematics -Building Dual-Language Thinking, Not Just Knowledge

Mathematics in Dehong Secondary combinesbilingual and inquiry-based learning. The course reinforces the logic and rigor of the Shanghai National Curriculum while integrating academic English, preparing students fora smooth transition into future international programssuch as the IBDP.

  • Bilingual terminology:When learning “比例,” students also master “ratio” and “proportion,” applying these concepts in real-life projects like designing a “One-Day Tour in Shanghai” budget.
  • Problem-solving and expression:In exploring “linear functions,” students describe graph features and real-life applications in English, such as constant-speed motion.
  • Differentiated tasks:In the “probability” unit, students complete tasks suited to their levels—from dice-based probability games to designing their own game and writing English analysis reports.

3、Global Perspectives -Seeing the World Beyond the Classroom

One of the most exciting additions to the Secondary curriculum is Global Perspectives—a subject that integrates economics, business, environmental systems, social studies, geography and history. It helps students understand diverse cultures and global issues from multiple viewpoints. In Grade 6, students measure temperatures and humidity across different campus areas toanalyze microclimates and present bilingual reports. They also exploreShanghai’s global role and responsibilities, presenting their findings through English group presentations.

4、Hands-on Science Learning by Experimenting

In Grade 6 Science, students conduct experiments in the school’s science lab and SE21, learning throughboth Chinese and English. Closely aligned with the national curriculum, the course emphasizes practicallearning through experiments and project showcases. Examples include testing the pH level of everyday foods and labeling results in English, or creating 3D cell models with bilingual observation notes.

G7C2 Helen Li

Since entering Secondary School, I’ve found reading English materials much easier, which helps prepare me for higher grades. My favorite subject is Science—doing experiments in the lab makes learning much more engaging and helps me really understand what we learn in class.”

5、Drama Class -Let English Come Alive on Stage

Newly introduced in Grade 6, Drama helps studentsexpress themselves confidently while improving their spoken English. Led by professional drama teachers in Dehong’s black box theatre, students read scripts, play characters, and perform short plays—all in English. Currently, Grade 6 students are rehearsingThe Great Race. Without memorizing vocabulary lists, they naturally acquire authentic expressions and pronunciation through performance, while also building confidence.

G6C2 Martina Gao

The new subjects like Science and Global Perspectives are great, but Drama is my favorite! We learn acting, practice English, and make new friends. It even helps us work better together in group projects in other subjects.

6、Mentorship System -More Than Academics, It’s About Care

From Grade 6, every student has not only a homeroom teacher but also apersonal mentor—someone who truly understands and supports them. Mentors guide students in setting goals, tracking progress, managing time, and developing effective study habits. They also provide emotional support, helping students reflect and plan their growth journeys.

7、Classroom Mobility -Learning to Manage Time and Responsibility

Instead of staying in one classroom all day, Secondary students follow amoving-class system. Each subject takes place in a dedicated classroom, and students must prepare their materials and move independently between lessons. This small changecultivates time awareness, responsibility, and self-management—helping students transition from teacher-directed learning to independent study.

G7C4 Charlie Li

With faster lessons and more challenging content, I’ve learned to be more proactive in understanding every topic. Time management is also key—teachers no longer remind us constantly, so we must plan our own homework and revision schedule.

8、Flexible Boarding Options -Supporting Both Family Needs and Independence

From Grade 6, families may choose fromweekly boardingorflexible boardingoptions. This helps balance home and school life while fostering students’ independence and self-discipline in a supportive residential environment.

A Personalized Journey to Self-Discovery

1、Personalized Support Based on Interests and Needs

By Grade 6, students already show diverse English levels, interests, and learning habits. At Dehong Shanghai, wedo not follow a “one-size-fits-all” model. Instead, we respect and inspire individuality, offering tailored pathways for academic and personal growth.

For example, in Mathematics, students who need extra practice can join theMath Enhancement Qidi, while those seeking challenge can take part in theAMC 8 Qidior theMath Modelling Workshop. In English, besides differentiated classroom instruction, students can join enrichment Qidi such asWriting Workshops, Debate, and Public Speaking. Every year, Dehong Shanghai offers over a hundred Qidi courses across areas likeprintmaking, cooking, Model United Nations, Dehong Farm, K-pop dance, and frisbee—helping students explore passions and build collaboration and leadership skills.

G6C4 Nina Ma

I love the new Qidi courses, especially Baking! By trying so many new things, I’m starting to discover what I truly enjoy and what I’m good at.

2、A Step-by-Step Universityand Career Pathway Starting from Grade 6

University planning may sound far off for Grade 6, but at Dehong Shanghai, we believe future success grows from early exploration. Our University and Career Counselling (UCC) system runs through Grades 6–12, guiding students progressively toward their long-term goals.

(G6-G12 UCC Roadmap)

In Grade 6—theExploration Stage—students begin by:

  • Building a personal growth portfolio:Usingprofessional online platforms, they record their activities, skill development, and reflections, forming their own “growth database.”
  • Exploring interests broadly:Throughdiverse subjects, Qidi projects, and workshops, students act as “explorers,” trying out different academic and creative fields to find their true passions.
  • Developing goal-setting habits:Withmentors and UCC counsellors, students set short-term goals and review progress regularly—laying the foundation for self-discipline and responsibility.

The exploration in Grade 6 helps students develop study routines in Grade 7, identify focus areas in Grade 8, and confidently aim for their dream universities in high school.

At Dehong Shanghai Secondary School, we are committed to providing a warm, professional, and personalized environment for students from diverse educational backgrounds. We believe education is not only about getting into great universities but also abouthelping students discover who they are and become lifelong learners with clear goals and inner confidence. For every Grade 6 student, Dehong’s growth support system is more than a curriculum—it isa holistic, future-oriented frameworkdesigned to nurture independence, resilience, and purpose. Here, each student can find their rhythm, embrace their potential, and begin their exciting new chapter in Secondary School.
