EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award Studentship: " Probing brain functions at scale for precise deep brain modulation”
King’s College London | Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine
博导: Dr Yijing Xie
截止日期:July 08, 2025 周二
资助的博士项目(全球学生)
About the Project
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) can transform the lives of patients with Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. An implanted device is used to deliver electrical impulses to specific brain areas to treat symptoms. However, the exact mechanism by which these electrical impulses modulate abnormal brain activity remains unclear.
The project aims to improve our understanding of the brains response to DBS by using cutting edge advances in multimodal imaging. In particular, you will use and further develop our functional optical endomicroscopic imaging systems to visualise brain functional activities in situ. The imaging system exploits advanced fibre light field technology for snapshot 3D imaging of brain cells and single photon fluorescence imaging for detecting neural activity. This provides new measures of neural activity in response to the electrical stimulation in real time at both cellular level and circuit level. Using these measurements together with computational models and Artificial Intelligence (AI), this system can be a powerful tool to understand DBS mechanisms and optimise DBS therapy.
You will gain expertise in advanced optical measurements, electrophysiological techniques and learn advanced signal processing. There will also be opportunities for you to develop and learn biophysical modelling and AI techniques. This will be set within the context of a rich translational research landscape set within one of London’s largest hospitals and a unique MedTech hub.

Electrified Chemical Synthesis for a Zero-Carbon Future
University of Sydney | School of Chemistry
博导:Dr Haihui Joy Jiang
截止日期:July 30, 2025 周三
资助的博士项目(全球学生)
About the Project
Synthetic nitrogen fertilizer produced by the Haber-Bosch process provides food security for half of the global population (4 billion people) today. However, this industrial process accounts for 1.4% of global CO₂ emissions, 1-2% of the world’s total energy consumption, and nearly 40% of world’s hydrogen fuels every year. Inspired by lightning strikes in nature, we use electrical discharge to drive radical reactions at gas-liquid-solid interfaces. Our group designs green and scalable methods to electrify chemical synthesis and simplify synthetic routes that are otherwise energy intensive or pollutive. Inorganic chemistry projects include making nitrogen fertilizers, fuels, and sanitation products from air and water. Organic chemistry projects include plasma driven cross-coupling reactions, aromatic functionalization, and olefin oxidation reactions.
