Fully Funded PhD in Acoustics, Vibration & Metamaterials for Buildings

University of Auckland | Department of Mechanical Engineering

博导:Dr Andrew Hall, Dr George Dodd, Assoc Prof Vladislav Sorokin

截止日期:全年可申

资助的博士项目(全球学生)

About the Project

Have you ever experienced the annoying thuds and thumps of someone on the floor above moving around or dropping something? How about loud music coming through the wall next to you? Are you interested in the mechanics of linear and nonlinear metamaterials? The problem of noise has become increasingly important in a world of increasing noise pollution and densification. A transdisciplinary team led by the Acoustics and Vibration Research Centre at the University of Auckland is seeking applicants for an exciting research project that tackles this problem by using mechanical and acoustic metamaterials to radically improve impact sound insulation of walls, doors, and windows. Fully funded PhD research studentships are available, which include tuition fees, a stipend, and support for research-related activities such as consumables and travel.

The Research

There is a critical need for high-density housing that meets higher standards for acoustic comfort and privacy to ensure the health and well-being of occupants. Noise is transmitted by both airborne and structure-borne vibrations within a building, and current methods for reducing it are of limited effectiveness. By using systems of metamaterials that interact together, we can enhance the performance of weak points in the building envelope, including walls, windows, and doors. The research will focus on combinations of multiple different linear and nonlinear metamaterials working together with conventional systems optimized for performance. The research will combine analytical and numerical modeling with a real focus on application, through practical experimentation right up to prototype development, using our state-of-the-art full-scale acoustic testing chambers.

The Team

This project is part of the Acoustics and Vibration Research Centre (AVRC) at the University of Auckland and is funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand as part of the Mana Tūānuku Research Leader Fellowship held by Dr. Andrew Hall. Other team members include A/Prof. Vladislav Sorokin (UoA), Dr. George Dodd (UoA), and Dr. Emilio Calius. The AVRC has unique experimental facilities, and high-performance computational facilities through the National eScience Infrastructure in NZ.

The Applicant

We are looking for well-balanced candidates with backgrounds in experimentation and a passion for applying theory to reality. A background in analytical and/or numerical modeling is essential. Self-discipline, time management, critical thinking, curiosity, and creativity are all key skills we are looking for in the candidate. We encourage women applicants.

To Apply

Applications ideally by July 1st. Please send a CV or resume, academic transcript, and a brief description of what you could bring to this research to Dr. Andrew Hall (UoA), A/Prof. Vladislav Sorokin (UoA), or Dr. George Dodd (UoA).

AI-Assisted Wireless Charging System Design and Optimization

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University | School of Internet of Things

博导:Dr Wenzhang Zhang

截止日期:全年可申

资助的博士项目(全球学生)

About the Project

In recent years, wireless charging technologies have attracted much attention due to its potential to provide a continuous power supply without a physical connection. Currently, most existing studies focus on optimizing wireless charging systems for specific applications, while overlooking the real-time capabilities introduced by artificial intelligence (AI) technology to the system. The application of AI in wireless charging systems can monitor and optimize the power transfer efficiency of wireless charging systems in real-time, potentially improve charging efficiency, reduce energy loss and enhance overall system performance. Despite this, there is still a gap in designing and optimizing AI-assisted wireless charging system.

To advance the field, this gap must be bridged by AI algorithms that can dynamically adjust charging parameters and predict system behaviour under various operating conditions. By solving this problem, we can not only advance theoretical research on wireless charging systems, but also promote the practical application of AI in the field of low-altitude economy.
