buffering
Some animals live in social groups where contain animals are stronger, more dominant, and have better access to resources. Weaker animals, when trying to access resources, may provoke the aggression of the stronger animals. In order to avoid such confrontation, weaker animals may use an infant to help them interact with stronger animals in the group. This technique is called buffering because the infant acts as a buffer, or protective presence, between the two animals, enabling the weaker animal to approach more dominant animals without causing a fight. Scientists believe that buffering works because animals are usually less likely to behave aggressively in the presence of infant animals.
听力:
Ok, so scientists have seen this happen with certain monkeys like for instance, a species of monkey that lives in Japan. These monkeys live together; several dozen living together in a group and in these groups the stronger males are always first in line for the best food.
If a weaker male monkey were to approach the lead males by himself when they’re eating to try to get some food, the stronger males might get angry and try to hurt it so, the weaker males have to wait until the stronger males have eaten and thus don’t end up getting as much food, but what a weaker male will sometimes do is, it’ll actually borrow one of the babies in the group; a baby monkey from its mother. It’ll pick up the baby monkey and carry it along when it goes over to the lead males to try to get some food and remarkably, when the weaker male monkey has the baby monkey with it, the stronger monkeys allow the weaker male to get closer, maybe even share some of the food they’re eating and won ’t try to hurt it.

Black Mimosa

Dr. Achebe
This week, we discussed the importance of role models and opinion makers in society. One idea we discussed was the widespread impact of "influencers." Influencers are people who are very active posting on social media and who have many followers. Influencers' posts and opinions can influence their followers' choices on everything from fashion to politics. In your opinion, do social media influencers generally have a positive or negative effect on their followers? Why do you think so?
Kelly
I think the influencers' effect is generally positive. People can learn about the latest trends and topics in a very quick and efficient way by following influencers. In the past, people had to spend time looking through magazines or visiting boutiques to even know what was trending.
Paul
I think influencers generally have a negative effect because they have far too much influence. I can think of one influencer who only has to mention a particular kind of sports shoe, and the next day they'll be sold out. The followers aren't really thinking for themselves; they're just blindly following the influencers' choices.

3.tar sands通过地下管道运输,也会造成环境破坏

Dr.Diaz:
This week, we are going to discuss charitable work and community service: ordinary people volunteering their time to help their communities. Charitable or community-support activities range from cleaning up neighborhoods to running youth clubs or caring for older people. But many communities experience a problem: there are not enough people willing to do charitable or community work. What is one good way to encourage more people to do charitable or community work? Explain your choice.
Claire:
Others might disagree, but I think one way to get more people to do charitable work is to pay them for their time. Even a small amount that a charitable organization coordinating the work could afford would help. I think younger people in particular would be more willing to participate if they could earn a little money.
Paul:
I'm not sure I agree with Claire. People should participate because it is the right thing to do, not because there is a financial reward. Maybe the solution is in making people understand how important community work is. If people have a better understanding of that, they will be more willing to do their part.
