候选辩题
01 Economy
Resolved:On balance, the development of the platform economy has been more beneficial than harmful for China.
总体而言,平台经济的发展对中国而言利大于弊。
Background
The platform economy in China refers to the rise of digital platforms that connect users with services, goods, and information—examples include e-commerce platforms like Alibaba and JD.com, ride-hailing apps such as Didi, and fintech services like Alipay. Over the past decade, these platforms have transformed China’s economy by increasing convenience, creating jobs, and stimulating innovation in logistics, payments, and online retail. They have also facilitated entrepreneurship by lowering entry barriers for small businesses. Critics, however, argue that the platform economy can harm traditional businesses, contribute to worker exploitation in gig jobs, and raise concerns around data privacy and monopolistic practices. Debaters on this topic weigh these economic, social, and regulatory impacts to determine whether the net effect on Chinese society is positive or negative.
02 Livelihood
Resolved:On balance, the dominance of supermarkets in the grocery sector is more beneficial than harmful.
总体而言,超市在食品杂货零售行业中的主导地位利大于弊。
Background
Supermarkets have become the dominant form of grocery retail in many countries, including China, where chains such as Walmart, Carrefour, and domestic retailers like Yonghui have expanded rapidly. Their growth has improved access to a wide variety of products, offered lower prices through economies of scale, and provided higher standards of food safety and hygiene. Supermarkets also streamline supply chains and contribute to employment. However, their dominance can threaten small local stores, reduce market diversity, and sometimes lead to environmental impacts from large-scale distribution. This topic invites debate over whether the societal and economic benefits of supermarket growth outweigh the negative consequences for local communities and small businesses.
03 Social
Resolved:China should prioritize the expansion of public childcare over childbirth subsidies in response to population decline.
面对人口下降,中国应优先扩大公共托育服务,而非提供生育补贴。
Background
China is facing a demographic challenge, with declining birth rates and an aging population threatening long-term economic growth. Policymakers have explored strategies such as financial incentives for families (childbirth subsidies) and investments in public childcare facilities. Expanding public childcare could reduce the burden on working parents, especially women, increase labor force participation, and support early childhood development. Subsidies, on the other hand, aim to make raising children more affordable but may not address structural barriers like limited childcare access. Debaters on this topic must consider which policy approach would be more effective in encouraging higher fertility and supporting families while balancing economic and social impacts.
