Advancing Inclusive Urban Design through Systems Thinking

University of Leeds | Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences

博导:Dr May Newisar, Dr Mohammed Abdelmegid

截止日期:2023年12月01日 周五

资助的博士项目(全球学生)

项目描述:

About the Project

In architecture and urbanism studies, participatory approaches have been proven effective in improving cities' development and shaping the built environment, contributing to a better quality of life. However, there is limited knowledge in this field, particularly regarding the inclusion of disadvantaged populations in decision-making processes, as they may lack access to information, have difficulty understanding complex engineering documents, or lose interest due to a lack of trust between the community and decision-makers.

Designing urban development projects that integrate architecture and urban design principles, community needs, and sustainable development goals (SDGs) can be challenging due to the complex and interconnected nature of urban systems. Addressing this challenge requires a holistic approach to support decision-making. Systems thinking and modern digital tools, such as Computer Simulation, Digital Twins, and Augmented Reality, can help integrate various stakeholders' requirements into decision-making. Such tools can enable virtual experimentation with different alternatives to refine and validate strategies before physical implementation.

This research project is an interdisciplinary endeavour combining architecture and urbanism with project management and operational research. It aims to develop an integrated digital framework leveraging participatory urban planning and design principles and advanced digital technologies to facilitate the design of inclusive public spaces within complex urban systems. This framework will address the challenge of ensuring an equitable engagement of all stakeholders in the decision-making process in urban planning and design projects, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and inclusive built environment.

We seek exceptional candidates who have the knowledge and background in architecture and related disciplines. Prior knowledge of (or the willingness to learn) advanced digital tools for decision-making support is essential. This is achieved by researching and building cutting-edge approaches and techniques in the fields of urban studies, project management, systems thinking, operational research, modelling, and simulation.

White Rose BBSRC DTP: Molecular mechanism of organellar replication initiation in Plasmodium falciparum

University of Sheffield | White Rose BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership

博导:Dr Indrajit Lahiri, Dr T Craggs

截止日期:2024年01月07日,周天

资助的博士项目(全球学生)

项目描述:

About the Project

We invite applications for a BBSRC funded White Rose Doctoral Training Program (DTP) studentship to study how organellar replication functions in Plasmodium, the pathogen responsible for causing malaria.

Plasmodium harbours an essential non-photosynthetic plastid called the apicoplast. Just like mitochondria, apicoplast has its own genome and accurate duplication of the apicoplast DNA is essential for Plasmodium survival. Apicoplast replication is performed by a dedicated replication machinery (replisome), which is divergent from both the eukaryotic and bacterial replisomes. At present we do not know how the apicoplast replisome functions. In this inter-disciplinary project we will use single particle electron cryomicroscopy (cryoEM) along with single molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (smFRET) to develop a comprehensive picture of how apicoplast genome duplication occurs, focusing specifically on the initial steps of replication.

This work will have a major impact on our understanding of replication, a fundamental cellular process, and will also inform downstream research geared towards antimalarial drug development for combating multi-drug resistant Plasmodium infection.

About the DTP

This studentship is offered as part of the White Rose BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) in Mechanistic Biology, which brings together the research of the world-class molecular and cellular bioscience centres at the White Rose universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.

Our mission is to train excellent bio-scientists who understand how living systems work

and can innovate to address global challenges, such as the impact of climate change, a healthier old age, sustainable food production, land use and energy production.

What is on offer?

This is a core/iCASE studentships for entry in October 2024.

Join us and you will receive a 4-year, funded PhD programme of research and skills training, with cross-disciplinary supervision, plus a structured programme of cohort-wide training and networking events. A highlight is the annual symposium, which is planned and delivered by students.

A unique part of your training will be the Professional Internships for PhD Students (PIPS), where you will spend three months at a host organisation of your choosing, gaining experience of work in a professional environment, and acquiring transferable skills that will be beneficial in your future career.

How to apply – Expression of Interest

Students may apply for up to three projects anywhere in the Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP).  Applications will be to the DTP centrally, using an online Expression of Interest (EoI). The EoI will include:

  • CV information; not submitted separately
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) data
  • Names of two referees

Deadline for EoIs is midnight Sunday 7th January 2024.

Submit EoIs using this

link: https://leeds.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/white-rose-bbsrc-dtp-expression-of-interest-form

Shortlisted candidates will be required to make formal applications to the Graduate School at each institution, supplying the necessary paperwork.

Interviews will be held either Friday 2nd and Monday 5th to Friday 9th February, or Monday 19th to Friday 23rd and Monday 26th February 2024, in-person at Leeds, Sheffield and York, with a panel representing all 3 Universities. Shortlisted candidates will be notified of a specific time/date to attend. If you have applied for more than one project and are selected for interview, you will be interviewed only once.
