暑期PF辩题解析
*线上全国邀请赛与年度冠军赛同辩题
In early 2020, the United Kingdom officially left the European Union. This decision, which was the result of populist sentiment spreading across the UK and resulting in a widespread distrust of the European Union, sent shockwaves around both Europe and the rest of the world. This decision cemented the rise of populist politics that has been seen in many countries in the past two decades and signified that even some of the world’s largest powers have begun to turn inwards economically, politically, and culturally. In fact, the referendum to decide whether to remain in the EU or not was held in 2016 – the same year that Donald Trump was elected to the Presidency of the United States, which was another earmark of this rise of populist politics.
Founded in 1993 after the development of many different treaties and organizations that trace back to the post-WWII period, the European Union is an organization made up of 27 countries. It has turned into somewhat of a federal government over the member countries, with each member country being similar to a state within one big European country. However, the nature of the European Union allows each country to retain its own sovereignty and power, which is an important distinction between the European Union and countries that have federal structures.
While the original purpose of European integration was to prevent any one country from becoming too independent to go to war with any other country, the benefits of integration have proven to be widespread. Notably, the GDP of the European Union is about 16 trillion Euros. One mechanism of the European Union is the single market, which refers to the free trade that exists between member states. With no tariffs and minimal regulations between member countries, merchants are able to buy and sell European products with ease. This has allowed for the rapid development of European industry and has resulted in the European Union market being one of the largest in the world. Similarly, the European Union also allows for the free movement of people between its member states. When traveling in Europe, one does not have to receive visas or passport stamps when they cross into a new country – in fact, whatever border walls and checkpoints remain are largely unused.
With this context, we can begin our investigation of the topic at hand.
Proarguments on this topic will revolve around revitalizing the United Kingdom’s economy and presence in the international market. Access to the European Union market would help the United Kingdom participate in more trade and business with the rest of Europe. Additionally, it would allow for more foreign investment to enter the United Kingdom from Europe. This could help revitalize British business and create more jobs.
Moreover, membership in the European Union would also allow British citizens to participate in a number of projects that the European Union has created. One such project is an educational exchange program called Erasmus, which allows British students to study at foreign universities across the EU. It would also allow students from across Europe to study in the United Kingdom. This sort of exchange could improve the flow of ideas across borders and benefit innovation efforts in the United Kingdom, which would certainly help its economy.
On theCon sideof this topic, arguments will likely center on the autonomy of the United Kingdom. The reasons why the citizenry of the United Kingdom voted in the referendum to leave the European Union are still relevant – namely, economic security of British citizens, excess regulations, and national identity.
First, membership in the European Union entails a free flow of labor coming into the United Kingdom. This has had consequences for locals in the United Kingdom, as many jobs have been displaced as a result of foreign workers coming into the country and perhaps working for lower wages than what British locals are willing to work for.As a result, attitudes against European integration brewed leading up to the referendum.
Second, the massive project of integration that is the European Union comes with a hefty load of regulation. While business and trade are relatively more free in the European Union, the government of the European Union can set the terms and regulations that the trade is done with. As such, many British people felt that the economic rules that they were forced to follow were made by far-away bureaucrats who weren’t knowledgeable about or attentive to the needs of everyday British citizens.
Overall, this topic will be a rich one to debate and I encourage everyone to research it thoroughly! Given that there will be economic arguments on both sides,be sure to take note of any economic terms or concepts that you encounter; familiarizing yourself with these will be helpful down the road when you have to explain them in debate rounds to your opponents and judges!
