After the motions are revealed, the judge may provide teams with basic definitions of the motions but will not elaborate on potential arguments. Their role is solely to offer a brief explanation of what the motion entails, providing definitions only when necessary to ensure clarity.

In preliminary rounds, teams may have one member missing in the debate ("Iron person") for a single round. Using this option for more than one round makes the team ineligible for elimination rounds. During eliminations, Teams are not allowed to debate with an iron person.

During the first three main speeches, opposing team members may offer Points of Information (POIs) between 0:30 and 3:30 of the speech. A POI is a short question or objection (up to 15 seconds). Speakers must accept at least one POI per speech; refusing all may lower their speaker score. POIs should be concise and relevant to the speech.

Pay close attention to the exact wording of the motion. Your definition must directly address it. Focus on key verbs (e.g. ban, support, regret) and identify who/what is being affected (e.g. governments, individuals, corporations). As Proposition, your job is to uphold the motion’s stance, as Opposition, you must challenge it. Avoid overly broad definitions and stick to what the motion demands.

Opposition may challenge the Proposition's definition only if it is unfair or tautological. A challenge requires proposing an alternative definition and justifying why it is better. Frequent misuse of this rule (e.g. frivolous challenges) may lower strategy scores.

The use of electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) is strictly prohibited in the debate rooms. Teams may only use printed speeches/notes for prepared motions, along with one reference book, one dictionary, and blank papers. Any violation of this rule may result in penalties including forfeiture of the round.

The JWSD Nationals will feature a combination of prepared and impromptu debates Rounds 1 and 2 will feature the prepared motions. From Rounds 3, 4, 5 through to the finals, all debates will be impromptu, with unique motions revealed for each flight. Motions will be disclosed to teams once both are seated in the debate room, and teams will have 20 minutes to prepare without access to external assistance.

All elimination rounds feature a panel of at least 3 judges. Decisions are made by majority vote if judges disagree. Judges will disclose the results and each provide oral feedback except in finals, where the results will be announced during the awards ceremony.

It can help teams quickly gather relevant data and context to build strong arguments and support their case during preparation. The dictionary will assist in defining and clarifying the meanings of unfamiliar words to keep you on top of things.

Each team may consist of up to 5 members, but only 3 are permitted to actively participate in the debate. The remaining 2 members may assist during preparation time but must NOT contribute in any way (verbally or non-verbally) once the debate begins. This includes passing notes, whispering, or signaling. Observers should remain silent and seated to ensure fair play. Violations may result in penalties.

(Note: Judges’ decisions are final; subjective scoring protests are not accepted.)
