A Guide to Cracking the Pressure of Debates: 3 Practical Tips

I believe the primary reasons behind the significant pressure you sometimes feel are threefold: firstly, a sense of inadequate preparation on your part; secondly, the perception that your opponents' arguments are highly compelling; and thirdly, the observation that your opponents sometimes adopt a rather aggressive demeanor. Consequently, we will address each of these issues one by one with targeted solutions.

First, regarding you're not prepared enough, it's more of a problem that before the competition.

I do think that all debaters shouldthoroughly research for the topic. You should understand your preparation as much as possible, that you feel like even if your opponent is reading something new, you are confident enough to win your own argumentations.

Chances are that every single debate competition your opponent is probably very prepared with your own material, which means it's probably gonna be very hard for you to thoroughly rebut their argumentation and prove their entire case is simply not true. Soif you're able to be confident at least in your own preparation, and then catch the judge's attention on your own preparation, then you probably would be able to come down and be less stressful before the competition.

So, be familiar with your material, as my first recommendation.

The second issue is, what if my opponents read something that's very new, and I have never prepared or heard about it before?

First of all, you need to remember thatHarbinger has a very large group of coaches, and we're all doing research and preparation for you. So, if your opponent is reading something that you have never ever heard before, and the coaches have never mentioned before. Chances are thatthis argumentation is actually not having a very strong link, that your opponents probably use an example coming from another country to apply for the topic.

So, you probably canthink thoroughly and commonly about whether or not this argumentation actually make sense. Why my coaches didn't think about this? Is there any logical fallacy, or did my opponents actually exaggerate the argumentation a little bit?

In that way, you will be able to justuse your logic to respond. You don't have to only depend on the preparation you have previously.

Finally, if you're only being stressed because your opponent is acting in a very aggressive way, I think, the calmer you look like in the debate competition, the more the judge would prefer you.

The calmer you appear during the debate, the more favorably judges will view you.Maintaining confidence in the face of an aggressive opponent signals that you trust your material and are not easily annoyed by your opponent's misbehavior at all.

In this way, you would actually look better in front of the judges, and increase the chance for the judge to vote for you. So, don't panic, act confidently, and then the chances are that you are going to win the competition eventually.
