不久前，美国最高法院以决定性多数推翻了40多年来大学招生采用的平权政策。
在这项6票对3票的裁决中，最高法院占多数的保守派大法官裁定哈佛大学和北卡罗来纳大学的“平权行动”（Affirmative Action）招生计划违宪。
多年来，全国各地的招生官一直在为这种不可避免的情况做准备。Affirmative Action的终结，对华裔学生是个大好消息，但是很难削弱顶尖学院对招收来自不同背景学生的承诺。
1 根据这一裁决，招生工作将如何变化？
在最高法院的裁决之前，其实大学招生中的平权行动已经在九个州被取缔，包括加利福尼亚州、密歇根州和德克萨斯州。
在加州209号提案禁止招生中采取平权行动（1996年）之后，加州大学实施了多项种族中立的替代方案：包括针对低收入学生的外展工作、为更多学生提供入学保证、以及取消标准化考试成绩。根据加州大学去年夏天提交给最高法院的法庭之友陈述，这些政策改善了地域多样性，增加了低收入学生。
密歇根州的选民在 2006 年通过了类似的公投（提案 2），但很快就发现非洲裔和拉丁裔学生的入学人数急剧下降。
德克萨斯州公立大学必须自动接收每一位以班级前 10% 成绩毕业的德克萨斯州高中生。但对于 UT-Austin 来说，德克萨斯州的学生如果在班级中名列前 6%，就会自动被录取，而且州法律要求 75% 的新生可以通过这种方式被录取。剩下的 25% 通过传统的整体审查流程被录取。
那么，考虑到这些现实世界的例子，高校--尤其是不依靠国家提供大部分学生的私立机构--将如何改变他们的外展和招生，继续扩大代表性不足的少数族裔学生的入学机会 ？
在这方面，许多基础工作已经打好了。与 Questbridge、Posse 和 College Horizons 等社区组织合作，为大学提供了接触弱势背景和社区的优秀学生的新途径。
2 根据最高法院的裁决，大学招生选拔程序发生变化
最高法院的裁决是在提前招生截止日期前短短几个月做出的，该决定将在申请 2028 届毕业生（2024 年高中毕业）的学生中得到全面实施。一些转变已经发生了。正如《纽约时报》五月报道的那样，Common App将删除族裔信息。
但是学生通过申请表，还有很多机会提供文化背景线索。更明显的线索包括姓名（学生和家长）、在家使用的语言、少数族裔的教会，以文化为主题的课外活动如黑人、拉丁裔和亚太裔学生团体、舞蹈形式如印度古典舞、踢踏舞和民俗舞、以及鼓乐队等音乐团体，等等。读者可以通过高中概况也可了解学生高中和社区的人口统计信息。学生也可能表示参与了针对少数群体的辅导组织，如 Questbridge 或 Prep for Prep。
大学申请主作文和各大学的文书也为学生提供充足的机会来分享他们的背景细节。有趣的是，首席大法官约翰·罗伯茨写道：“没有任何法律禁止大学考虑申请人关于种族如何影响申请人生活的讨论，只要这种讨论与申请人的性格品质或独特能力相关"。
顶尖学校实行的全面招生流程已经允许考虑申请人的种族如何影响他们的生活，就像首席大法官所阐述的那样。不妨看看 Common App 的七个论文题目中的第一个：“Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story”.
虽然大多数大学尚未发布补充问题，去年的文书命题已为学生提供讨论文化背景和生活经历的空间：MIT: MIT brings people with diverse backgrounds and experiences together to better the lives of others. Our students work to improve their communities in different ways, from tackling the world’s biggest challenges to being a good friend. Describe one way you have collaborated with people who are different from you to contribute to your community.
Dartmouth: “Be yourself,” Oscar Wilde advised. “Everyone else is taken.” Introduce yourself in 200-250 words.
University of Richmond: Richmond welcomes students from various backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences. What is at least one way you will contribute to our community that is not already mentioned in your application?
NYU: NYU was founded on the belief that a student’s identity should not dictate the ability for them to access higher education. That sense of opportunity for all students, of all backgrounds, remains a part of who we are today and a critical part of what makes us a world class university. Our community embraces diversity, in all its forms, as a cornerstone of the NYU experience. We would like to better understand how your experiences would help us to shape and grow our diverse community.
Tufts: How have the environments or experiences of your upbringing – your family, home, neighborhood, or community – shaped the person you are today?
Stanford: Stanford’s community is an essential part of the undergraduate experience. We come from all walks of life, share our own traditions, take care of one another, and think of ourselves as family. How do you define family and what contributions have you made to yours?
