In a time when smartphones can snap and share high-resolution photos in seconds, it might seem strange that a growing number of people—especially millennials and Gen Z—are turning to instant film cameras. Yet Polaroid-style photography has made a spectacular comeback, fueled by a mix of nostalgia, emotional connection, and a yearning for tangible experiences in an increasingly digital world.

Once thought obsolete, instant film photography has found new life in the 21st century. When it comes to instant imaging cameras, there is no more famous brand than Polaroid. Polaroid is a camera manufacturing company based in the Netherlands that produces instant film and cameras. Despite Polaroid's bankruptcy and the company halting instant film production in 2008, the format didn't die. Instead, it evolved. Today, "Polaroid" has become a catch-all label for instant photography, even if the camera wasn't made by Polaroid itself. The market has since been dominated by Fujifilm's Instax cameras, which saw sales skyrocket from just 100,000 units in 2004 to 3.5 million in 2019. Like vinyl records, instant film now thrives on its retro charm—and the fact that it offers something digital photography can't: physical presence.

These quirks make each photo feel more unique, more human—and ultimately more meaningful. Professional photographers like Emily Soto echo this view, emphasizing how the limitations of instant film force the artist to slow down, think, and be intentional about what they capture. The result is an image that feels more like a memory and less like a digital file.

According to street photographer Temoor Iqbal, this shift toward analog is a reaction to the transient nature of modern media. In a fast-paced, screen-saturated world, people crave physical proof of their experiences.

As research shows, nostalgia can reduce our desire for money and increase our emotional satisfaction. Businesses understand this—and they're capitalizing on it. Apps that simulate instant film aesthetics are wildly popular on Instagram, allowing users to mimic the nostalgic feel even without a physical camera. This shows that part of the appeal is aesthetic, not just functional.

Gen Z is a generation that prioritizes individuality and self-expression, often seeking out unique, personalized products. Instant film, with its unpredictability and one-of-a-kind results, fits that mindset perfectly. According to McKinsey & Company, Gen Z consumers are willing to pay more for products that reflect their personal identity—and at around $1 per shot, instant film certainly isn't cheap. Yet its continued popularity suggests that the cost is worth it to those seeking something authentic.
