Topic 1

Resolved:On balance, the "involution" (neijuan) culture does more long-term harm than good to the workforce.

总体而言, “内卷”文化对劳动力群体的长期影响弊大于利。

There has been a long discussion in recent years about the "involution" culture, known in Chinese as 内卷. With fiercer competition but limited resources, young talents continuously invest more of their efforts and try their best not to fail. More labor time, 996 instead of regular office hours, cheaper products with almost zero profit, perfect SAT scores with even more extracurricular activities—the list goes on. The "involution" culture has created a new series of social anxieties. On the other hand, continuous efforts toward improvement could also make us better and stronger in international competition. Getting into Ivy League schools or becoming the number one company in an industry, the successful results do show why people continue to engage in neijuan (内卷). Tell us your thoughts on this cultural phenomenon.

Topic 2

Resolved:On balance, platform-based gig work benefits workers more than it harms them.

总体而言,平台零工工作对劳动者利大于弊。

Platform-based gig work has rapidly expanded, reshaping how people earn income in the global digital economy. Platforms like Didi and Meituan have provided millions of job opportunities for low-income individuals. Supporters argue that these platforms offer workers greater flexibility, autonomy, and access to opportunities that traditional employment may not be able to provide. Critics, however, point to income instability, limited labor protections, and power imbalances between platforms and workers. Using the framework of “on balance”, students will need to justify why their side outweighs the other rather than demonstrating which side is completely in the right.

Topic 3

Resolved:Governments should ban social media for all persons under 16.

政府应禁止16岁以下人群使用社交媒体。

On December 10, 2025, Australia became the first country in the world to pass a law banning children under 16 from using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. Many other countries are considering similar measure too. This shows how the impact of social media on children and adolescents has sparked widespread concern. Teams affirming the resolution will argue that banning social media protects mental health, reduces exposure to harmful content, and limits addictive design practices targeting minors. Teams negating the resolution will respond that bans are ineffective, difficult to enforce, and restrict freedom of expression and access to information. Debates will weigh child safety against personal liberty and technological practicality.

Topic 4

Resolved:The European Union should make financial contributions the primary form of refugee burden sharing rather than relocation.

欧盟应将财政捐助作为难民负担分摊的主要形式,而非人员安置。

As global displacement reaches record levels, the question of how countries should share responsibility for refugees has become increasingly urgent. Pro teams will argue that financial contributions allow for more efficient support, reduce political backlash, and respect national sovereignty while still aiding host countries. Con teams will counter that relocation is necessary for genuine responsibility-sharing, prevents overburdening frontline states, and better protects refugee rights. The debate will center on efficiency versus moral obligation. What do you think as the best way to handle the refugee issue?

Topic 5

Resolved:For-profit prisons in the United States should be banned.

美国应禁止营利性监狱。

The role of private companies in the criminal justice system remains highly controversial. Pro teams will make the case that for-profit prisons incentivize mass incarceration, reduce rehabilitation efforts, and undermine justice. On the other-hand Con teams will contend that private prisons can lower costs, increase efficiency, and relieve overcrowding. The debate focuses on whether profit motives are compatible with ethical incarceration. What is the main objective when running prisons? After years of private prison operation, what is the lesson learned?

Topic 6

Resolved:On balance, governments should prioritize nuclear energy over renewable energy.

总体而言,各国政府应优先发展核能而非可再生能源。

As governments seek solutions to climate change, energy policy choices are increasingly debated. Team 'Nuclear' will argue that nuclear energy provides reliable, low-carbon baseload power and is essential for meeting emissions targets. Team ‘Renewable’ will emphasize the risks of nuclear waste, high costs, and the scalability of renewable alternatives like wind and solar. Debate rounds will often weigh energy reliability against safety, cost, and long-term sustainability.
