Prep Motion

Students should be able to grade their own teachers

Pro Sample Case

Students should be able to grade their own teachers.

Grading teachers means students would regularly give their teachers scores based on clear explanations, fair treatment, helpful feedback, and classroom support. Students could submit their grades privately so they would feel safe being honest. School leaders would use these grades as one part of evaluating each teacher, together with lesson observations and student progress. We have two reasons to support this motion.

First, students have the most complete experience of what happens in the classroom. A school leader might observe one or two lessons, but students attend the teacher's class throughout the year. They know whether the teacher usually explains difficult ideas clearly, answers questions patiently, and gives students useful help. They also know whether classroom rules are fair and whether every student is treated with respect. One student might give an unfair score, but similar grades from many students can show patterns that adults have missed. Student grades therefore give schools important information about everyday teaching.

Second, student grades can help teachers improve and make classrooms more accountable. The results can show teachers what they already do well and what their students need them to change. For example, several students might report that lessons move too quickly or that homework instructions are difficult to understand. The teacher can then slow down, provide examples, or explain assignments more carefully. Teachers would also know that students have a safe way to report repeated problems. This encourages teachers to listen to students and take their concerns seriously.

Students should not have complete control over a teacher's job, but their experiences should count. They spend hours in the classroom and are directly affected by the quality of the teaching. Allowing students to grade their teachers would give schools better information, help teachers improve, and create clearer and fairer classrooms. For these reasons, we support the motion.

Con Sample Case

Students should not be able to grade their own teachers.

We agree that schools should listen carefully to students. However, giving teachers formal grades is not a fair or reliable way to evaluate their work. Teachers sometimes need to make decisions that students dislike, and younger students may not yet understand everything that makes someone a good teacher. We have two reasons to oppose this motion.

First, students may grade teachers based on popularity instead of teaching quality. A teacher who gives little homework, allows more games, or makes tests very easy might receive high grades. A stricter teacher who gives challenging work and corrects poor behavior might receive low grades, even if students learn much more in that class. Students might also give a bad grade because they received a disappointing test score, lost a privilege, or had one disagreement with the teacher. Even if the grades are private, teachers may feel pressure to keep students happy. They could make lessons easier or avoid necessary rules because they are worried about receiving low scores. This could weaken both learning and classroom discipline.

Second, schools have better ways to evaluate teachers and hear student concerns. Trained school leaders can observe several lessons, examine lesson plans, check the quality of assignments, and measure whether students are making progress. Schools can also ask students for written comments, meet with class representatives, and provide a safe way to report serious problems. Parents can share concerns about homework, communication, or changes in their children's learning. These methods allow schools to consider student experiences without turning teaching into a score or popularity contest.

Student opinions matter, but formal grades could be unfair to teachers and encourage them to become easier instead of more effective. Schools should collect student comments while using trained adults, classroom observations, and clear evidence to judge teaching quality. This protects good teachers while still giving students a meaningful voice. For these reasons, we oppose the motion.
