In the contemporary digital age, violent films and video games have beenprevailingas a way for entertainment. Arguments about their effect are nothing new. To my mind, coping with violent films and video games needs adelicatebalance, rather than adownrightprohibition.
Undeniably, violent movies and video games may bring negative impacts. In the first place, they can lead to social violent crimes. Studies have shown that theexcessiveexposureto violent content may lead audiences and players to mistakenly believe that violence can effectively solve their problems. In addition, violent media may be harmful to the mental health of the public. For instance, especially foradolescentswho are not mentally mature, the violent elements in such media maydistorttheir values and affect their mental development.
However, this does not mean that violent films and video games should be banned all gotether. In fact, the violence in movies and video games proves to be effective as means for relaxation. The violent content in films can bring “image schemas” to people that they have never experienced in the real world, such as war and death. It allows audiences to experience unknownsensationswithout facing real dangers, enriching their cognitive and aesthetic ability. In the games, players gain a sense of achievement by completing challenging operations or defeating the opponents, which satisfies their psychological needs and helps to reduce their mental stress.
