In educational settings, rewarding students for their academic performance is a common practice aimed at motivating them. However, there is debate over whether such rewards should be reserved only for top achievers or also given to those who have made significant improvements. In my opinion, both exceptional performance and personal progress deserve to be recognised.

On the one hand, many support the idea that only the best students should be rewarded, as they believe this approach drives academic excellence. Limiting awards to the highest achievers, they argue, creates a competitive atmosphere where all students are motivated to strive for first place. This approach is also viewed as fair and meritocratic: recognition is given purely for exceptional results, which reinforces the value of hard work and talent. Furthermore, some suggest that if rewards are given too broadly, their significance could be diluted; thus, concentrating praise on outstanding learners maintains the prestige of the accolade. Therefore, focusing only on the top performers is seen as an efficient way to raise overall academic standards.

On the other hand, others argue that students who show improvement should also be rewarded, since this encourages all students to keep making an effort. For supporters of this view, acknowledging progress – even if a student is not at the top of the class – helps motivate those who might otherwise feel overlooked. Such an inclusive approach ensures that praise is not limited to the naturally gifted but also extends to those who work hard to better themselves. As a result, learners who struggle academically will feel valued and remain engaged in their studies rather than giving up. Thus, rewarding progress is considered essential for fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

In conclusion, both rewarding top achievers and recognising improvement have their own merits. I believe that a strategy which celebrates both excellence and progress is most beneficial, as it motivates high performers to excel while encouraging all students to continue making progress.
